Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals

By Victoria Benda

All essential oils used for aromatherapy sessions are Young Living Essential Oils, and in my opinion, the finest and purest essential oils on the market today.

Lavender Aromatherapy is a natural, holistic therapy. It is the use of pure, unadulterated essential oils, hydrosols (floral waters) and other plant materials to support holistic wellness in humans and animals.

Essential oils were mankind's first medicine. From Egyptian hieroglyphics and Chinese manuscripts, we know that priests and physicians have been using essential oils for thousands of years.

Egyptian temples were dedicated to the production and blending of oils and recipes as recorded on the wall is hieroglyphics. Aromatherapy is also known to be used by the Greeks, Mayans and other indigenous cultures of the world for a variety of health reasons.

Essential oils are some of the oldest and most powerful therapeutic agents known. During the last decade essential oils have begun a resurgence in popularity in the United States. Essential oils have a broad spectrum antibacterial and therapeutic action, as now being rediscovered by many researchers and health-care professionals.

Due to the resurgence of aromatherapy today, domestic and wild animals are also being treated with essential oils. Essential oils contain properties which include antibacterial, anti-fungal, regenerative, anti-inflammatory, tonic and balancing effects.

Essential oils have the same therapeutic and balancing effect on animals. They can promote physical, emotional and spiritual well-being and are being used by many veterinarians and other animal care professionals across the country. Many new facets in healing for animals are now being discovered and documented by animal health professionals as a result of the expanded use of essential oils for physical and emotional healing.

Purple Cone Flower - EchineceaEssential oils have been proven to have a very profound effect on shelter, rescue and adopted dogs. They help the animal bond with the owner after such a traumatic experience, and can reduce stress and anxiety in animals.

When working with aromatherapy with animal clients, I always introduce the oils to the animals in the most positive manner. I allow the animal to choose the oil, or oils that they are attracted to. Animals are aware of their needs and I find that they are the best judges. Animal olfactory senses are 50 -100 times stronger than humans. Diffusion in natural oil bases are generally a safe and effective way to introduce animals to essential oils.

I have witnessed essential oils provide powerful relief and other profound effects. Their therapeutic potential is enormous and we are just beginning to rediscover their potential in support of our well-being.
