Equine Sports Massage Therapy

By Jeanette James, ESMT

Equine sports massage therapy is often employed to enhance performance levels of the equine in question. Horses of any discipline will benefit. It is non-invasive, hands on therapy which addresses muscle problems in horses that arise from normal workloads and training, past training and use issues, competitions or injuries present or past.

Massage has long been used in human athletes and in recent years has been popular for the horse owner. The benefits include increased range of motion, enhancement of athletic ability, helps to extend the athletic ability of the horse, addresses muscle spasms, trigger points, adhesions in muscle and fascia, lengthens muscle fibers, reduces pain, increases circulation, relieves compromised muscle tissue and helps to restore health to such, helps to relieve compensation issues and so forth. Many top notch horses in this country see a regular equine massage therapist to keep them loose, supple and ready to perform at their best.

Massage is also helpful with injury cases and various other health problems depending on the case. As with any injury, health problem or other related issues it is best to call the equine veterinarian first to establish the true cause of the problem and then design a course of treatment from there.

Typically, any muscle that is under work naturally begins to tighten over a period of time. This can cause painful areas in the horse, performance levels can be off, time can be off, length of stride can be off, attitude can get sour, and on and on. Massage is used for a wide variety of reasons with great success and results. Massage also blends very well with other modalities such as chiropractic work or other types of equine body work.

Basically, every horse should receive professional massage. While improvement is generally noted immediately, the true benefits are cumulative.
